'Roof Overview' Feature

Miller Roofing's award winning approach to staff development was featured in the Summer edition of 'Roof Overview', the CITB newsletter published for the roofing industry. The article highlighted the National Training Award won by Miller Roofing and featured a photograph of contracts manager, Peter Johnston, conducting a training session in the company's purpose-built training centre.

Visit from Deputy Enterprise Minister Lewis Macdonald

Miller Roofing can now guarantee their very own clean air, by bringing the first eco-friendly roof to Clydebank. The tool store at Miller Roofing's base in Clydebank now hosts a green roof which guarantees the staff their oxygen supply for the next year!

The company were praised today, following a visit by Deputy Enterprise Minister Lewis Macdonald for driving up skills amongst its worforce.

Stuart Miller of Miller Roofing said "I was particularly impressed by the Minister's intrigue in our green and garden roof concept and the benefits that could be obtained for both clients and the environment"

Visiting Miller Roofing to show his support for Scotland's Construction Industry, Mr Macdonald said: "Miller Roofing has proved it understands the value of training by setting up a training school, allowing its 28-strong workforce to learn different specialist techniques. The company has won several awards for staff training, including a National Training Award in 2002 and is an Investor in People.

"The Executive fully recognises the importance of the construction sector to Scotland's economy.

"We are committed to building a competitive construction industry in Scotland and to working in co-operation with trade groups to create a strategy that secures the supply of relevant skills.

"Miller Roofing is demonstrating how the industry can play a key role in forging the kind of highly skilled and ambitious workforce that is both good for business and essential to Scotland's economic growth."

The company's most innovative development to date is the Complete Green and Garden Roofing System. They run seminars for architects and planners to help them understand the applications and benefits of Green and Garden Roofs.

Enterprising Scotland Awards celebrate the best in innovation

Clydebank-based Miller Roofing which specialises in the design and construction of commercial flat roofing systems won the Award for E-business at the recent nation-wide Enterprising Scotland Awards - sponsored by the Royal Bank of Scotland.

Miller Roofing Limited demonstrated to the judges how the company has benefited from its commitment and investment in information and communications technology, even in a traditional sector like the construction industry. The company has established a high speed ASDL link to its London office and has installed software which allows contracts to be managed over the internet.

The company won the E-business category at the Scottish Enterprise event to recognise the quality of innovation going on around the country.

Established in 1984 the company has transformed its business practice through the implementation of new e-business technologies. Delighted Managing Director, Stuart Miller said: "The introduction of new technologies has enabled Miller Roofing to differentiate itself in a traditional marketplace and create competitive advantage. The internet, high speed file transfer, digital surveys and mobile communications including photo messaging phones means that we are able to make decisions fast. Client contact is immediate and service levels are high."

Miller Roofing wins National Training Award

Training takes Miller Roofing to New Heights

Flat-roofing specialist, Miller Roofing was awarded a National Training Award in the Employer Entries Category at the 2002 Annual Awards Dinner held at the Hilton Glasgow. The Award recognises the substantial impact training is having on business performance. Since introducing training right across the 35-strong staff, Miller Roofing has achieved an increase in profits and £1M in turnover. Miller Roofing is in good company with the other Award winners including Rolls-Royce plc and Dunfermline Building Society.

With support from local business development agencies, a Training Plan was developed around the areas of greatest training need. Clydebank based Miller Roofing also set up a training centre recreating conditions on the roof to allow training in the different specialist techniques and tools used for flat roof installation. The centre is in the process of being recognised by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) as a national training centre for single ply applications.

All site staff now hold the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) cards well ahead of the legislation making this a requirement by 2004. Managing Director, Stuart Miller adds, "We were keen for all relevant staff to secure these cards to demonstrate the level of skills available to clients. It is fantastic to see the staff developing through the training and it has led them to exceed their own and the company?s expectations of them."

IT training has enabled the company to embrace the latest technology, improving operational efficiency and this was recognised with Miller Roofing winning the recent Scottish Enterprise Dunbartonshire Award for e-business.

Expressing his reaction to the National Training Award, Stuart Miller says, "As a company we have seen the business benefits of structured training but winning this Award recognises the effort and the commitment to training from each member of staff and it's a huge pat on the back for everyone. It's very motivating for all of us to know that we have been compared with the best in the UK and we are delighted that our efforts have been recognised with this Award."

Training Highlights

14 operatives have now achieved SVQ Level 2 in Applied Waterproof Membranes.

Peter Johnstone, Contracts Manager, has achieved CSCS Level 5 and is now working towards the Assessors Award. He has also completed a 5-day Site Managers Health & Safety course organised and run by Balfour Beatty.

Both CITB and SPRA have used Miller Roofing as a training case study.

Autumn 2001

Miller Roofscapes™ picks up Award for Innovation

Miller Roofing was delighted to win the Award for Innovation for their Green & Garden Roofing Service at the Scottish Enterprise Dunbartonshire Business Excellence Awards. The event, held at the 5-star Cameron House Hotel and compered by Jackie Bird, is in its eighth year and is aimed at acknowledging the success and hard work of Dunbartonshire's leading businesses.

The judges commented that they were impressed that one contract covers every aspect of the project from the design stage to maintaining the finished green roof or roof garden, with Miller Roofing taking total responsibility for the project, bringing together skills, experience and quality products to deliver a fully integrated service.

Miller Roofing was also a finalist in the Marketing category and was highly commended.

Managing Director Stuart Miller said: "This is a niche market, but one which is increasingly important particularly for economic, ecological and planning reasons."
