At a recent National Construction College annual awards ceremony held at Hampden Park Stadium in Glasgow to announce the winning apprentices in various categories in construction we are delighted to announce that Jamie Chalmers received the premier award within the flat roofing category as the top second year apprentice in Scotland.
In the photograph you will see Jamie being presented with this award by Barry McGuigan, the legendary Irish Featherweight boxer who has World and Commonwealth titles, who was the main guest speaker of the college at the awards ceremony. Jamie received some encouraging words from Barry to help him in his career.
Following the success of our young Sarnafil fitter, William McIntyre, at the I.F.D. World Championships in Hungary last year, where he represented the U.K. in the single ply roofing category, William was presented with an award by the N.F.R.C. (National Federation of Roofing Contractors) at their 2008 conference held in Cardiff in May (see picture of William receiving his award at the conference).
Miller Roofing Ltd were successful finalists in two categories of roofing at the National Roofing Awards held at the N.F.R.C. conference in Cardiff in May 2008.
In the roof sheeting section our contract at the John Wheatley College in Glasgow for HBG Construction made the final but unfortunately did not win.
In the liquid waterproofing section of our contract at the Maggie's Centre in Kirkcaldy won the top award and the trophy was collected by David Thomson (Managing Director) and Peter Johnston (Contracts Director) (see picture). This particular contract also won the major award for projects under 3000 sq m at the Liquid Plastics Conference last year.
We have re-organised our Contracts Section under Peter Johnston and have promoted both Robert Gilmour and Matt Smith to the new positions of Site Supervisors.
Both Matt and Robert have earned the opportunity for this promotion, each having been with the company a number of years and gained considerable experience in the various roofing disciplines Miller Roofing now offer to our clients.
Scott McKay has been promoted to Senior Contracts Co-ordinator, heading up the most important function of providing the necessary support to the various sites.
We trust these important structural changes will improve the service we offer to our clients.
At the Kalzip conference held in October last year, we won the award for the "Best Newcomer" to their Teamkal network of approved contractors. We continue to train our existing roofers in this discipline in order that we can provide multi-disciplined skilled roofing operatives.

Sarnafil roofing continues to be our largest sector of roofing work and we currently have another two apprentices about to start their training.

Twelve of our operatives have now successfully completed their training with Liquid Plastics and we are currently working on a number of new-build projects where we have, in conjunction with Liquid Plastics Technical Staff, provided appropriate Specifications for these new-build developments.
We have also successfully completed a project for John Dewar & Sons in Glasgow where we used a Liquid Plastics Specification to solve a difficult problem with existing gutters on existing whisky warehouses.

William McIntyre once again represented the U.K. at the I.F.D. World Championships for young roofers (under 25), held this year in Hungary.
Despite several problems, none of which was the fault of William, we are extremely proud to announce that he overcame the problems and gained a very creditable 5th place in the world.
The N.F.R.C. will make a special presentation to William at their next A.G.M. in recognition of his skills, attitude and manner in which he represented his country.

After almost a year in assisting in the design development and value engineering, we continue our long association with Balfour Beatty Construction Ltd at the new Stobhill and Victoria Infirmary sites in Glasgow.
These contracts comprise the full range of expertise within the company with Sarnafil, Kalzip and Liquid Plastics roof coverings.
The Fusion, West Granton, Edinburgh - value area £500,000
This is a flatted residential development by Barratt East Scotland comprising mainly Kalzip roofing but with small areas of Sarnafil .
Forthside Cinema, Stirling - value area £450,000
A development by Ogilvies for whom we recently successfully completed two projects at Bellshill, Glasgow. We are pleased to continue the association on this project which comprises various Sarnafil designed roofs.
St Stephens High School, Greenock - value area £600,000
This is a Sarnafil Roof Management contract for Inverclyde Council for which we will act as Principal Contractor.
National Galleries of Scotland - value area £100,000
This contract is the second phase of a contract to refurbish the whole of the roof of the National Galleries of Scotland. We recently successfully completed the first phase.
The roof is being refurbished with all our National treasures still on display within the building and we are proud to be associated with the project.
Blantyre Court, Erskine - value area £130,000
A flatted residential development by Cruden Building and Renewals comprising Kalzip roofing.
Donaldson College, Linlithgow - value area £400,000
A design/build roofing package for Sir Robert McAlpine for whom we have successfully completed a number of prestigious contracts in Scotland.
The various roofs are all designed with Sarnafil roofing and we produced the necessary detailed drawings.
Dundee University Teaching Block - value area £300,000
A continuation of our long association with HBG Construction (Scotland) Ltd, this contract is designed as Sarnafil roofing to the various roofing areas .
Miller Roofing's award winning approach to staff development was featured in the Summer edition of 'Roof Overview', the CITB newsletter published for the roofing industry. The article highlighted the National Training Award won by Miller Roofing and featured a photograph of contracts manager, Peter Johnston, conducting a training session in the company's purpose-built training centre.
Miller Roofing can now guarantee their very own clean air, by bringing the first eco-friendly roof to Clydebank. The tool store at Miller Roofing's base in Clydebank now hosts a green roof which guarantees the staff their oxygen supply for the next year!
The company were praised today, following a visit by Deputy Enterprise Minister Lewis Macdonald for driving up skills amongst its worforce.
Stuart Miller of Miller Roofing said "I was particularly impressed by the Minister's intrigue in our green and garden roof concept and the benefits that could be obtained for both clients and the environment"
Visiting Miller Roofing to show his support for Scotland's Construction Industry, Mr Macdonald said: "Miller Roofing has proved it understands the value of training by setting up a training school, allowing its 28-strong workforce to learn different specialist techniques. The company has won several awards for staff training, including a National Training Award in 2002 and is an Investor in People.
"The Executive fully recognises the importance of the construction sector to Scotland's economy.
"We are committed to building a competitive construction industry in Scotland and to working in co-operation with trade groups to create a strategy that secures the supply of relevant skills.

The company's most innovative development to date is the Complete Green and Garden Roofing System. They run seminars for architects and planners to help them understand the applications and benefits of Green and Garden Roofs.
Clydebank-based Miller Roofing which specialises in the design and construction of commercial flat roofing systems won the Award for E-business at the recent nation-wide Enterprising Scotland Awards - sponsored by the Royal Bank of Scotland.
Miller Roofing Limited demonstrated to the judges how the company has benefited from its commitment and investment in information and communications technology, even in a traditional sector like the construction industry. The company has established a high speed ASDL link to its London office and has installed software which allows contracts to be managed over the internet.
The company won the E-business category at the Scottish Enterprise event to recognise the quality of innovation going on around the country.
Established in 1984 the company has transformed its business practice through the implementation of new e-business technologies. Delighted Managing Director, Stuart Miller said: "The introduction of new technologies has enabled Miller Roofing to differentiate itself in a traditional marketplace and create competitive advantage. The internet, high speed file transfer, digital surveys and mobile communications including photo messaging phones means that we are able to make decisions fast. Client contact is immediate and service levels are high."
Flat-roofing specialist, Miller Roofing was awarded a National Training Award in the Employer Entries Category at the 2002 Annual Awards Dinner held at the Hilton Glasgow. The Award recognises the substantial impact training is having on business performance. Since introducing training right across the 35-strong staff, Miller Roofing has achieved an increase in profits and £1M in turnover. Miller Roofing is in good company with the other Award winners including Rolls-Royce plc and Dunfermline Building Society.
With support from local business development agencies, a Training Plan was developed around the areas of greatest training need. Clydebank based Miller Roofing also set up a training centre recreating conditions on the roof to allow training in the different specialist techniques and tools used for flat roof installation. The centre is in the process of being recognised by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) as a national training centre for single ply applications.
All site staff now hold the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) cards well ahead of the legislation making this a requirement by 2004. Managing Director, Stuart Miller adds, "We were keen for all relevant staff to secure these cards to demonstrate the level of skills available to clients. It is fantastic to see the staff developing through the training and it has led them to exceed their own and the company?s expectations of them."
IT training has enabled the company to embrace the latest technology, improving operational efficiency and this was recognised with Miller Roofing winning the recent Scottish Enterprise Dunbartonshire Award for e-business.
Expressing his reaction to the National Training Award, Stuart Miller says, "As a company we have seen the business benefits of structured training but winning this Award recognises the effort and the commitment to training from each member of staff and it's a huge pat on the back for everyone. It's very motivating for all of us to know that we have been compared with the best in the UK and we are delighted that our efforts have been recognised with this Award."
14 operatives have now achieved SVQ Level 2 in Applied Waterproof Membranes.
Peter Johnston, Contracts Manager, has achieved CSCS Level 5 and is now working towards the Assessors Award. He has also completed a 5-day Site Managers Health & Safety course organised and run by Balfour Beatty.
Both CITB and SPRA have used Miller Roofing as a training case study.
Miller Roofing was delighted to win the Award for Innovation for their Green & Garden Roofing Service at the Scottish Enterprise Dunbartonshire Business Excellence Awards. The event, held at the 5-star Cameron House Hotel and compered by Jackie Bird, is in its eighth year and is aimed at acknowledging the success and hard work of Dunbartonshire's leading businesses.
The judges commented that they were impressed that one contract covers every aspect of the project from the design stage to maintaining the finished green roof or roof garden, with Miller Roofing taking total responsibility for the project, bringing together skills, experience and quality products to deliver a fully integrated service.
Miller Roofing was also a finalist in the Marketing category and was highly commended.
Managing Director Stuart Miller said: "This is a niche market, but one which is increasingly important particularly for economic, ecological and planning reasons."
